This morning early we drove to Abiquiu from the ranch. It was windy and chilly, dark with blue clouds. Here and there the sunrise was showing through with bright colors. The top of Pedernal was covered with a flat white fog cloud. We had breakfast. I typed a few lists left over from the ranch book room. Miss OâKeeffe called Santa Fe for a vet to take care of Jingoâs right foot. It may be a splinter, goatâs head (a kind of sticker that has two sharp prongs like a goatâs horns), or a rock bruise. Maybe it could be arthritis. We went to the book room after I read a list of books considered valuable to a rare book curator from Los Angeles. Miss OâKeeffe said that after two shelves of books toppled over, she had a wonderful several days going through them, remembering people and places connected with them. So I think she is no longer very interested in unloading the books soon. At any rate, I am bringing a list back at her bidding to show George Miller at the University of New Mexico General Library to get more advice about the collection. She showed me an article about Henry McBride, who was a critic they waited for after an opening. It was in ARTnews written by Daniel Catton Rich. OâKeeffe said there is a book by Rich about McBride coming out this fall. He seemed like an impressive man, a Quaker into leading public taste, not directing or bullying.
Lunch with Juan was hilarious as usual. He makes a continuous stream of humorous remarks like how many people leave OâKeeffe at a run holding up their pants as they go, the former secretaries. We discussed the Ghost Ranch promotional film which has a sneaky fifteen seconds of OâKeeffe and another thirty seconds of her paintings, one of the skull, and another one with a large pink flower.
